I have been digging pretty hard on Odessa, the fist leaked track from Caribou’s new album for a few months now so obviously I was pumped when then album officially came out today. It turns out that Odessa, while still awesome, is basically one-upped by almost EVERY fucking jam on here. It feels like wading through a technicolor pool of gel while a million tiny bio-luminescent creatures flutter around your eyelids. The extraordinary level of detail present in these tracks could easily turn into mush if the band didn’t manage to layer all of the complexities in consistently surprising and intuitive ways. Can you think of another track that pulls off fluttery flutes, therimin, rave-up synths arpeggios, ecstatic noise sax, clackety woodblocks, a vaguely african guitar breakdown, and in/out of sync vocal harmonies that wouldn’t sound out of place on an Arthur Russell OR Beach Boys album? I can’t.
